CHAI-WALLAH'S Chai Tea

about chai wallah

Reprinted from the Brattleboro Food Co-op's newsletter
Neil HarleyChai from India is a sweet aromatic spiced milk tea, also known as masala tea, which is consumed by millions of people each day, just as we in the West drink coffee.
Masala tea or chai is a blend of spices, the most common being cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper, mixed with a rich black tea, milk, and a sweetener. This warming and soothing concoction, brewed by street vendors in India, called chai-wallahs, is boiled in a pan on the stovetop for a few minutes, then strained into a cup.
Neil Harley, a trained chef, has travelled extensively in his quest for adventure and culinary experiences. While backpacking in India, he sampled many cups of chai, each with its own unique blend of spice and tea. Many backpackers have fond memories of drinking chai so the true test of an authentic chai is its ability to conjure those instant pictures of where they were when they had their first chai!
After exploring the spice bazaars of Rajasthan, and hundreds of cups of chai later, Neil decided to experiment with his own chai blend. He named his business Chai Wallah’s Real Chai in the hopes of alerting customers to this vital distinction between instant and pre-mixed chai. This is authentic Indian chai, a liquid meditation!
Chai Wallah is a Vermont Certified Organic Processor using 100% organic spice and Fair Trade Organic Teas. Neil buys his spices whole and grinds them in small batches to maintain freshness and potency giving his chai an intense aroma and flavor.
You can experience Chai Wallah’s chai in several ways. Neil sells his chai spice on its own for those who prefer to add their own tea or use the spice to flavor hot chocolate, rice pudding or even make ice cream. For those who like their tea and spice in one mix Neil offers the same spice blend with a full-bodied 100% organic Assam tea. Both can be purchased from the Brattleboro Food Co-op's bulk department. At the deli juice bar Neil’s chai is available made with either soy or cow’s milk freshly brewed from the airpots. 4oz packets of chai are available at the deli counter.

I made a mistake when I first made my Chai...I did not read the directions...and I put in 2 tablespoons of Chai.  WRONG CHOICE!!!  Boy, it was strong and nasty.  After reading the directions I realized it only took 1 teaspoon!

I wish you could smell this... so wonderful!

I took heated water with an equal amount of soy milk with 2 cubes of sugar.  So very good!!!!

This was really good. When I made my cup I added half hot water and half cool soy milk.  When I made my friend Charlie a cup I heated his soy milk.  You can do it either way, but I like my teas cooler than most.  My sensitive tongue does not like the hot hot tea :)

I gave this to my friend Robin to try.  I believe she liked it.  I know I made it for Charlie at work and he really liked it.
I also ordered the spice only, and I can add any of my black teas to it.  I look forward to trying this with different bacl teas. When I recieved my order, they also included this adorable magnet

Pickwick Tropical Fruit

At Massillon's Discount Outlet store I purchased some Pickwick tea.  I remember having this tea when I was in Europe in 1997.

Dawn and I give this tea two thumbs up.

banana, mango, pineapple, and passion fruit

I have not tried this one...but I look forward to opening this!

I liked the tea so much, that I made iced  tea out of it.
I took 4 tea bags and out them in a gallon of water.  Since it is an herbal tea it does not get bitter....so
I leave the tea bags in the pitcher the entire time,

HISTORY OF PICKWICK
Douwe Egberts has accumulated a lot of experience in creating different tea blends since 1753. This was the year Egbert Douwe opened his first small shop for selling coffee, tea and tobacco.

Until April 1937, all the teas of the company had been marketed with the Douwe Egberts brand name. At the time, the buyers received a tea box with a drawing of an English mail coach. This packaging proved to be very popular and inspired the search for an English sounding brand name for Douwe Egberts Tea.
Pickwick

Johannes Hessel was the Director of Douwe Egberts at this time and his wife loved tea as much as she loved the books of famous British writer Charles Dickens. Inspired by his novel ‘Pickwick Papers’ she suggested the name Pickwick. Since that time Douwe Egberts tea has been marketed under this brand name.

Caffe D' Amore, Inc. Vanilla Chai tea mix

I got some of this Chai in vanilla.  I was a big fan,  Not sure the calories of 150 are worth it...but it was really good.

Our Story

Crafting luxury by the cupful since 1895.

More than a century ago, at a ristorante in Bellagio, Italy, our family’s specially crafted caffe d’amore con un bacio, or “coffee of love with a kiss,” first won the hearts of an adoring local clientele.
This sweetly memorable beverage, indulgent both in flavor and in name, inspired the creation of what is now the world’s leading gourmet specialty beverage company, Caffe D’Amore.
Today’s Caffe D’Amore was founded in 1969, in Pasadena, California—some distance from turn-of-the-century Italy, but always close to the Old World heritage that inspired us.
It is this attention to artisanship, quality and flavor that distinguishes Caffe D’Amore’s renowned collection of gourmet beverages and food. For more than four decades, Caffe D’Amore has maintained a global reputation for superior taste and impeccable quality blended with modern-day innovation.
Our award-winning collection of brands includes Bellagio®, Petals™, Caffe D’Amore®, Chai Amore®, Chai Serenity™ and Frappe Freeze®. From decadent sipping chocolate to all-natural iced tea, we invite you to taste the tradition of quality in Caffe D’Amore, where passion meets flavor.

Svelte Spiced Chai Protien drink

At Massillon's Discount Outlet I found this delicious Chai protein drink.  I thought this drink was really really good!!
I am not a fan of Stevia- which this shake includes- but it was not over powering as some times it can be.  It left a small after taste, but it was not strong enough for me not to drink it.  I will drink this again if I find it at the outlet store!
