Writing is Kaufmann’s cup of tea

“I am a tea snob,” said Kerrie Kaufmann as she walked through the comfortable century-old home that showcases an eclectic mix of antiques, family heirlooms, books, teacups and teapots, as well as a rescue cat named Shakespeare.

Under no circumstances will she make tea from a tea bag; it must be loose and properly steeped. “Writing is my hobby, while tea, now that is my life and passion,” Kaufmann said. However, her hobby also has been her saving grace.

Kaufmann was 19 and a Bible college student when, rather suddenly, anxiety and paranoia overcame her, making her life miserable and subsequently forcing her to leave school and return home after a year and a half. The diagnosis was a chemical imbalance. A family friend suggested that perhaps journaling could help her sort out her feelings and emotions, so one day she began that therapeutic journal and her first book, “Claims of Love,” was born in one month.

Kaufmann said she would just sit down in the evening and the book would almost write itself. “It was a God thing,” she added.

“The characters lived in my head already and all I had to do was put them down on paper. It was so easy to write,” Kaufmann said. “It is fiction but somewhat autobiographical, like most fiction is. The main character is basically about a single gal with weight issues, works as a claims adjuster, and is just trying to live a God-honoring life,” Kaufmann said. All of the books took on a life of their own and were written in a few months or less. Her fifth book is underway, though it seems to be taking a bit longer.

Why? Kaufmann said she has no idea.

“I love to write and I have written poetry since I was a kid and had some pieces published,” she said. “I love to read and my favorite authors are Dee Henderson, Mindy Starns Clark, and Jane Austen.”

Still, Kaufmann said, her dream would be to win the Publisher’s Clearing House Contest and open a tea shop filled with antiques where people could read and just relax. As for Kaufmann, she’d just as well as go on mission trips around the world.

“While writing is my hobby, tea is my cup of tea,” said Kaufmann.
